UNICORNS

I've been working on a  comic pitch story that involves unicorns. It's been in the oven for almost five years, and I'm really itching to finish it and send it off to wherever it may land.

Originally my unicorn designs were the generic white horse. The pitch was quite a bit different then-  barely a pitch, in fact: more a powerful series of images in my mind. Those images- of a  warrior girl and her unicorn- would not leave my mind. They were occasionally pushed to the side by other ideas, but they lingered and clamored for attention.

Anyway, to the matter at hand: I stumbled across Yoshimasa Tsuchiya's scultpures on Twitter one day, and it absolutely changed the trajectory of the story and image in my mind, and I'm currently digesting him as a major reference. Google him, you'll be amazed. His creature scultures have an ethereal grace that I wish I could capture. So appropriate for unicorns- or as he more commonly makes, the kirin/ kilin ( the Eastern unicorn).

So, here are one of my unicorns as he stands right now. When I finish the pitch, I'll tell you more about the design changes and how they influenced the story.

It's Summer!

Summer's rolled in early, which means Marvel movie season is upon is, which means I get to trot out this old chestnut! Let's all try to have a safe and fun season! Falcon, Captain America, and the Winter Soldier seem like they're doing just that already.

Inking Chapter Two of [working title] Unplugged and Unpopular is Wrapping Up!

I've been working on a project for the last two years, and I've recently gone full thrust on it (after some rough times last year,  like getting my grad school application rejected ). I guess comics are stuck with me for the meantime! Thanks to my renting office space at Commonspace coworking center in BF Paranaque, I've been inking faster than ever.  I'm also having lots of fun! Working out of the house has really allowed me to get past the anxieties and lassitude that seemed to haunt me as I was working in my bedroom, and I think I've finally achieved a decent pace- about 10 pages a week ( crosses fingers). I make sure to take lots of breaks and stretch. So here we are, about to wrap up Chapter Two, after a year and a half of pencilling and thumbnailing. Three to go!

I'm also working at a style I've finally accepted. I don't think I'll ever really shed my love for delicate Japanese manga line art and dynamic storytelling, but I'll always try to integrate them with my deep roots in American cartoonists such as Dan DeCarlo, Bruce Timm, Carla Speed Mcneil, and Marc Silvestri, and of course the legendary Herge'.

Red is for...?

When I'm stuck I'll usually do quick sketches of some of my original story ideas that have yet to see the light of day. Today, Valentine's, I came up with this one. Maybe I'm not a Valentine kinda person...

Blushcon 2018 Meet and Chat

I'll be over at BlushCon 2018 chatting about comics ( specifically BL comics) at Eaton Centris in Quezon City today with writer Ace Vitangcol . It's a short chat, but I hope it'll be fun as well! This was an unused cover from a previous Blush event.
